Action:
Sildenafil inhibits phosphodiesterase type 5(PDE5) which is responsible for cGMP degradation in corpus cavernosum which results in smooth muscle relaxation and inflow of blood to the corpus cavernosum.
In plainspeak, it helps to push blood into the penis.
Indications and Dosage
Oral
Management of Erectile Dysfunction:
Adult: As citrate: 50 mg about 1 hr before sexual intercourse. May be increased or decreased depending on penile response.
Elderly: 25mg
Max dosage: 100mg not more than once in 24 hrs.
For patients with hepatic or renal impairment (creatinine clearance <30 ml/min) dosage is 25mg.
What side effects may occur?
Side effects cannot be anticipated. If any develop or change in intensity, inform your doctor as soon as possible. Only your doctor can determine if it is safe for you to continue taking Sildenafil Citrate. * More common side effects may include: Abnormal vision (color tinge, blurring, sensitivity to light), acid indigestion, diarrhea, flushing, headache, nasal congestion, urinary tract infection Heart attack, stroke, heart irregularities, dangerous surges in blood pressure, and sudden death have all been reported after use of Sildenafil Citrate, usually in men with existing cardiac risk factors, and typically during or shortly after sex.
